Master Grande Tradition Grande Complication This 2015 model is for the first time offered in red gol

The stars are particularly bright each night in Switzerland s Vallée de Joux. Obscured only by an occasional cloud, celestial bodies ignite the skies, inspiring the many watchmakers who work there. Jaeger-LeCoultre s watchmakers have long incorporated the moon and the stars in their timepieces, and as early as 1890 the company incorporated moon phase displays in its most complicated pocket watches. One Jaeger-LeCoultre grand complication from 1895, for example, offered a perpetual calendar with day, date, month, leap-year cycle and moon-phase indication.
Stéphane Belmont, Jaeger-LeCoultre s international marketing and technical director, august birthstone explains that Jaeger-LeCoultre made pocket watches with astronomical complications because buyers not only wanted to see the time, they enjoyed, and indeed were fascinated by, celestial motion and patterns and their role in devising our timekeeping.
Those watches were produced in very limited quantities for people who understood the notion of astronomy, he explains. And while most people have a limited understanding of how the earth, the moon and the stars govern time (and thus, our timepieces) the more collectors learn about astronomy, the more they enjoy moon-phase displays, perpetual calendars and even the rare sidereal time display on their own watches.
To keep up with the ever-deepening interest in all things celestial among consumers, and to address august birthstone the prominent role of the stars, planets and the moon in timekeeping, Jaeger-LeCoultre this year pays tribute to astronomy with several debuts, including one grand complication, a variety of moon-phase watches (including one model with a meteorite dial and another with a new Sphérotourbillon), a new Atmos and a perpetual calendar that seems to offer its wearer a moving map of the solar system for the wrist. Indeed, Jaeger-LeCoultre created blue dials for most of these models august birthstone to more vividly confer its celestial theme for 2015.
Asteroid Dreams When making a wish upon seeing a meteorite light up the night one usually doesn t include a desire to wear a piece of the shooting star. With the debut of Jaeger-LeCoultre s newest Master Calendar, however, such a wish might become commonplace at least for watch enthusiasts.
As pictured on the cover of this issue, Jaeger-LeCoultre s Master Calendar, and its large moon-phase display, is this year offered with a dial created from a piece of genuine meteorite. The fallen space rock used to create august birthstone the dial was discovered and registered in Sweden and hails from the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.
This extraterrestrial material makes for an unusual dial. Though cut from the same piece of meteorite, each slice reveals a different pattern, making every dial unique. Before Jaeger-LeCoultre can place it into the case, the meteorite must undergo several preparatory phases in order to insure that the iron-rich material can be utilized as a dial, with the required august birthstone holes cut and applied numerals, and with the appropriate dimensions. Once inside the Master Calendar s case, the rock formed over millions of years in the outer reaches of space will be safely ensconced in a 39mm steel or pink gold case for another few hundred years or longer.
As a Master Calendar, this new model displays its Caliber 866 perpetual calendar by means of a long hand tipped with a red or blue moon crescent sweeping around a 1- to 31 scale around the dial. And its moon-phase august birthstone display is a complete calendar display, showing new moon, first quarter, full moon and last quarter, pictured emerging from two clouds and into the stars.
With august birthstone this model s special dial, Jaeger-LeCoultre s own historic, august birthstone figurative moon display holds its own atop an actual, though grounded, satellite. This combination creates a vision august birthstone any watch enthusiast will likely wish upon every night.
Master Grande Tradition Grande Complication This 2015 model is for the first time offered in red gold and now features a concave bezel that recalls the designs of nineteenth century pocket watches. In the spirit of measuring astronomical time, Jaeger-LeCoultre s watchmakers have persuaded the tourbillon in this Grande Complication model to not indicate the passing of ordinary civil time, but instead that of sidereal time based not on the sun but on other more remote, fixed stars. Sidereal time is the unit used by astronomers to follow august birthstone the trajectory of heavenly bodies, and very few watches display it.
The orbital flying tourbillon is fixed to the dial. Unlike most traditional dials, this one rotates august birthstone in a counterclockwise direction once in exactly twenty-three hours, fifty-six minutes and four seconds a more precise measure of the speed of the earth s rotation. As part of Madison Avenue Watch week Jaeger-LeCoultre invites you to its New York boutique to see stunning photography as you investigate its fine timepieces. Jaeger-LeCoultre is hosting A Journey Through World Heritage Site: Glacier Bay National Park (USA), a photography exhibition by award-winning photographer Mark Kelley at the Jaeger-LeCoultre charlie and lola Boutique through April 25.
The Le Sentier, Switzerland-based watch company and UNESCO have been working together since 2008 to protect the forty-seven marine sites inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list. The partnership has helped double the marine areas protected by the World Heritage Convention and to establish a substantial network of marine site managers and scientists who pool their efforts and good practices charlie and lola to preserve the sites.
This year, the partnership s spotlight is on Glacier Bay National Park, first designed as a U.S. National Monument in 1925 and inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1992. For those with a bit more money to spend, watergirl and fireboy 2 Jaeger-LeCoultre presented new var

A bit of everything, well made and developed in-house, sums up Jaeger-LeCoultre's SIHH 2015 offerings nicely. The manufacture covered all the bases, at all price segments, for both genders. 
Jaeger-LeCoultre has the capacity, unique amongst watchmakers, watergirl and fireboy 2 to create well constructed and finished timepieces of great variety and numbers. Its offerings each year demonstrate that, and the SIHH 2015 line-up is no different.  The 2015 collection has a bit of everything, ranging from the vintage inspired Grande Reverso 1931 Seconde Centrale to the Duomètre Sphérotourbillon Moon. But Jaeger-LeCoultre did not reveal a major new complicated watergirl and fireboy 2 movement, maybe it has something watergirl and fireboy 2 up its sleeve for later in the year? [NB: All prices are in Singapore dollars (S$) and include 7% tax. US$1=S$1.35] Jaeger-LeCoultre's wristwatches can always be split in two categories: round and Reverso. Let's start with the latter, the brand's signature watch case. There are surprisingly few new Reverso timepieces launched this year, majority were variations of existing ladies models. The key new Reverso was the Reverso 1931 Seconde Centrale, the first Reverso 1931 with a central seconds. Despite watergirl and fireboy 2 the name this is based on a Reverso from 1935, and it has the faux vintage dial markings de rigeur for such vintage-inspired watches.
The 1931 Seconde Centrale has a solid case back suitable for personalisation (here's a first hand experience with hand-engraving ). It's available only in white gold, and only at Jaeger-LeCoultre boutiques, the  Reverso 1931 Seconde Centrale will cost S$28,600. And now on to the round watches. The men's timepieces were mostly conservatively styled wristwatches with small complications, something Jaeger-LeCoultre excels at. Previewed before SIHH was the Master Calendar Meteorite. It's essentially the same watch as the 39 mm  Master Calendar , except with a meteorite dial. 
The dial is made from a thin slice of meteorite discovered in Sweden, with a darker shade for the rose gold model and a pale grey on the steel. Highlighted by etching the material in acid, the Widmanstätten pattern of the material is formed by the nickel-iron crystals inside, making each dial unique. 
The meteorite dial Master Calendar costs about 20% more than its brass dial counterpart, retailing at S$18,190 in steel and S$38,100 in rose gold. Equipped with nearly the same movement is the Master Ultra Thin Moon 39, available with a black dial for the first time. This is 39 mm in diameter and just 4.9 mm high.
Also available in black for the first time is the Master Control watergirl and fireboy 2 Date, probably Jaeger-LeCoultre's most affordable watch. Priced at S$9850, this is a basic, fuss-free watch with a 39 mm case and an automatic movement.
For those with a bit more money to spend, watergirl and fireboy 2 Jaeger-LeCoultre presented new variant of several Duomètre models, watches with movements equipped with twin barrels and gear trains (hence the name). The Duomètre à Quantième Lunaire is now available with cut-outs on the dial that reveal the mechanics behind the twin power reserve indicators.
One gear train is devoted to the time, while the other powers the 1/6 of a second counter, moon phase and date. The movement is a visual treat, with an architecture common to all   Duometre watches like the Spherotourbillon , like the  grand sonnerie style winding watergirl and fireboy 2 clicks for both barrels.
Also getting a new dial treatment is the Master Grande Tradition Tourbillon Cylindrique à Quantième Perpétuel, a model first introduced three years ago . The model name says it all, this is a perpetual calendar with tourbillon equipped with a cylindrical hairspring (which provides more concentric breathing).
S$190,000 is the price of the privilege of owning the Master Grande Tradition Tourbillon Cylindrique à Quantième Perpétuel, watergirl and fireboy 2 unusual amongst high-end watches because there watergirl and fireboy 2 are more words in the name than digits in the price.
For several years now Jaeger-LeCoultre has been assiduously cultivating its female clientele and it continues in 2015. Several new Rendez-Vous models were launched, including new variants of the Night & Day, including this one with a black dial.  Available only in boutiques and priced at S$22,100, this has a 34 mm case and a steel bracelet.

Available for Apple devices, the JLC Moonphase provides wsv owners of Jaeger-LeCoultre watches with tutorials to correctly set the moonphase complications on their timepiece. Producing an app that helps the consumer with maintenance may be a more welcomed download compared to one that simply pushes ecommerce or heavily showcases timekeeping technology. wsv
Moon moments During wsv Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie, Jan. 19-23 in Geneva, Jaeger-LeCoultre focused its social media posts on its timepieces equipped with different types of moonphase complications.
Pieces highlighted included the Duomètre Sphérotourbillon Moon watch, the Atmos Marqueterie Céleste table clock, the Rendez-Vous Moon timepiece and the Master Grande Tradition Grande Complication wristwatch.
Within posts of the 2015 creations, Jaeger-LeCoultre included a prompt to download the JLC Moonphase app from the iTunes store. By doing so, the brand was able to meld traditional watchmaking with technology without having to enter the wearables field. wsv
When downloaded for either iPad or iPhone, the opening screen shows a Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Calendar wsv timepiece displaying the correct time of day. Below the watch, the app user can select Moonphase Indicator, Set my Moonphase or Full Moon Calendar.
In Moonphase Indicator the consumer can scroll through the different types of moonphase complications developed by Jaeger-LeCoultre. These include variant adaptations of the Duomètre a Quantieme Lunaire 40.5, the Atmos Classique Phases de Lune, the Atmos Marqueterie and the Duomètre Spherotourbillon moon complications, among others.
Each complication is given its own slide that when loaded moves to display how the moonphase would function when built into a timepiece. This also allows the user to look closely at the complication in larger detail than when it appears on a timepiece.
For wsv Set my Moonphase, the user can select between 18 Jaeger-LeCoultre timepieces, wsv including its Atmos clocks. When a watch or clock is selected, the app loads a slideshow that automatically beings, in a loop, to show the user how to align his watch with the device s camera. When the picture wsv is taken, the app then walks the users through wsv the steps to correctly set the moonphase.
The app also includes a monthly Lunar Calendar to show what the moonphase complication will look like, per day, when correctly set. The app s Lunar Calendar can be set for both the northern and southern hemisphere.
In general, watchmakers were not inherently threatened by the emergence of smart wearables due to their dedication to craftsmanship. But, as the technology was developed some watchmakers, as well as retailers and accessories makers, have realized the potential of collaborations to maintain relevancy in a changing marketplace ( see story ).
Zenith s The Experience is touted as something new in the watchmaker app category, which may spur downloads from consumers who collect timepieces or own a piece from the brand s collections ( see story ).

2015 sees the release of the Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Grande Tradition Minute Repeater watch. Jaeger-LeCoultre is one of the most revered names in watchmaking and is fondly yema referred to as La Grande Maison, which can be loosely translated as The Great Manufacture. In its rich 182-year history, the company has created over a thousand calibers, registered 400 or so patents and has numerous inventions credited to its name. And for the most part of the past century, yema it even provided movement blanks to Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet, and Vacheron Constantin. yema The caliber 920 is a great example of this and is still used even today by Audemars Piguet in Reference 15202 Extra-thin Royal Oak, also known as the Jumbo.
It is also one of the few manufactures that is well versed in all horological complications. Its new-for-2015 Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Grande Tradition Grande Complication yema (hands-on here) , which features a flying orbital tourbillon, indication of sidereal time, and minute repeater, is proof of that. Speaking of minute repeaters, these are something of a Jaeger-LeCoultre speciality. At SIHH 2014 last year, the manufacture unveiled the 11th timepiece of its Hybris Mechanica collection, the Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Ultra Thin Minute Repeater Flying Tourbillon, which became the thinnest minute repeater watch in production. Not only that, it also featured a flying tourbillon yema and was self-winding to boot. Clearly, yema Jaeger-LeCoultre has an affinity with minute repeater complications. yema
For 2015, Jaeger-LeCoultre yema has released a new minute repeater that will feature in its Master collection. The new Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Grande Tradition Minute yema Repeater comes in a very classically styled and sized 39mm pink gold case and is just 12.1mm thick. But more importantly, the new Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Grande Tradition Minute Repeater also has a very clean dial. The previous models with the reference numbers 5011410 and 5012550, yema were equipped with Jaeger-LeCoultre s caliber 947 and 947R, and had busier yema dials, with power reserve and barrel torque indications at 8 and 4 o clock, yema respectively, as well as a seconds sub-dial at 6 o clock. The new Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Grande Tradition Minute Repeater with the reference number 5092520 does away with the power reserve and barrel torque yema indications and only has a seconds sub-dial at 6 o clock. For collectors who found the older models slightly too busy looking, Jaeger-LeCoultre has heard your pleas.
However, while the dial may look simple, its construction is anything but. Look closely, and you will see that the dial is also finely grained, yema while the hour markers are in fact rendered using polished pink gold. The dauphine hands have also been hand-finished, and are endowed with both polished and sandblasted finishings.
Underneath the dial beats Jaeger-LeCoultre s caliber 942, which is assembled and decorated entirely by hand. The movement is made up of 437 parts, yema including 58 jewels, and a new 22k gold rotor bearing the logo of Jaeger-LeCoultre with polished and grain finishes. Caliber 942 also beats at 28,800 yema vph and has a power reserve of a very decent 40 hours. The caliber 942 also features Jaeger-LeCoultre s special crystal gong, which is machined to from a single piece from a top secret alloy. The gongs are then welded directly to the sapphire crystal, so that when the hammers yema strike, it creates a loudspeaker effect, allowing the minute repeater mechanism to be easily heard.
Jaeger-LeCoultre has also eschewed the traditional slide mechanism for activating the minute yema repeater function and opted for a more elegant push button system. This allows the watch s case to be compact, and for the Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Grande Tradition yema Minute Repeater, the push button has been positioned at a diagonal to the crystal gong, thus ensuring some measure of symmetry in its looks. The watch also features a safety mechanism which protects the watch against unintentional activation of the striking function.

Jaeger-LeCoultre s Master Grande Tradition Minute Repeater is activated by a single push-button, redesigned in a slimmer guise, instead of the traditional slide system. iwc This improvement on classic minute repeaters works to avoid the minute repeater to start if it is already in action, thus preventing iwc damage.
Master of minutes The minute repeater function is a classic movement found in many timepieces. To modernize the movement, Jaeger-LeCoultre used a crystal gong with a square section, iwc made from a secret alloy, to create an extremely rich sound.
The regularity is ensured by a silent regulator that controls iwc the energy created by the barrel of the minute repeater. Unlike the traditional system, the silent regulator operates at just 20 decibels, a level nearing silence.
For instance, smartwatches are often synced to a smartphone application that tracks the wearer s physical activity and sends push notifications. Breitling has taken the opposite approach by having the smartphone service the B55 Connected chronograph to enhance functionality and conviviality ( see story ).

The Jaeger-LeCoultre line-up at SIHH 2015 was heavy with moon phase watches, including helzberg the Master Calendar Meteorite. Part the JLC collection starting the nineties with a short interruption in the mid-2000s, the Master Calendar is styled like a mid-20th century triple calendar watch, sedate and functional, except it's now offered with a meteorite dial. While meteorite watch dials are not new, Corum offered such dials back in the 1980s, this is a first for Jaeger-LeCoultre. Composed mainly helzberg of iron and nickel, iron meteorites are always used for watch dials (meteorites can also be stone or a combination of the two), because of the attractive pattern that emerges when they are sliced up.  [Ed's note: The watches are covered in protective stickers, which are visible in the photos.]
The Widmanstätten pattern comes from the iron and nickel crystal inside the meteorite, with every slice being different. Each slice of meteorite is etched in acid to highlight the Widmanstätten pattern, best described as geometric brushstrokes. Depending on the treatment, the resulting tone of the meteorite varies. In the steel model the meteorite is a pale grey with blue accents, while the rose gold version is matched with a dark grey meteorite dial and red detailing.
Dial aside the Master Calendar Meteorite is identical to the triple calendar introduced two years ago . It displays the day, date, month and moon phase, with pushers in the case to advance each indication. Apertures are cut into the dial for the day and month, as well as for the seconds helzberg sub-dial. Though the seconds sub-dial is the same colour as the meteorite, it's actually a galvanised metal disc that's inserted into the meteorite helzberg dial. In rose gold
Inside is the calibre 866, based on JLC's workhorse automatic movement. As is typical of JLC movements, the movement is well constructed with features typically found in higher-end calibres like a free-sprung balance and a 22-ct. gold rotor mass. Blued steel screws and Geneva stripes enhance the visual appeal of the movement, which is decorated and produced industrially, but executed to a degree helzberg few others can manage helzberg on this scale.
The reverser gears for the bidirectional winding At 39 mm in diameter and 10.6 mm high, the case has modest dimensions, making it an easy fit under a cuff. The Master Calendar Meteorite in steel costs S$18,100, while the pink gold is S$35,100. Both prices include GST of 7%, and for international readers are equivalent to US$13,500 and US$26,100 each. So, what watch does one wear to the Academy maruca Awards as a first-time Oscar nominee? Admittedly, this was a new first-world problem for Tom Cross, who, as editor of the film Whiplash , recently received an Academy Award nomination for "Best Editing" - one of five Oscars Whiplash is up for this year. UPDATE: Tom Cross received the Academy Award (as well as Independent Spirit Award) for Film Editing for the movie Whiplash . This was a scenario Tom Cross did not anticipate when he started work on the labor-of-love indie drama. We were just happy to find out we got in to Sundance, explains Cross of Whiplash s long, unexpected trajectory: first debuting at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, then becoming one of - if not the - most acclaimed films of the year.
Shot in 19 days on a minuscule budget, Whiplash captures the psychological warfare between a young jazz drummer maruca striving for virtuosity maruca (Miles Teller) and his sadistic teacher/bandleader (J.K. Simmons) who punishes as much as pushes his disciple to the limits of his talent.
